We have had this crib for over a year now and love it. The side drops by using one hand and a foot, which is exactly what we wanted.(And is very hard to find!) It was easy assembly, I put it together with the help of a 3 yr old, and everything practically bolts together. There are some plastic pieces (sleeves that protect the wood), but there is no plastic on the lever that drops the side! The mechanism that drops the side is all metal.
